In recent years, the libraries in China have made rapid progress in the building of the electronic resources, and various Web-based service systems emerge day by day. Much attention has being paid to the resources integration, information portal, system integration, knowledge services, resource sharing and standard regulating. It is a big challenge for all the libraries at home and abroad to provide patrons with high-qualified and personalized knowledge services. At the end of 2003, three products of Ex Libris Ltd., the world-leading supplier in library system software, were introduced into the library of Beijing Jiaotong University. They are Aleph 500, the library automation system, MetaLib, the academic information portal system, and SFX, the original open linking service system. Through the one-year collective efforts, these three systems have come into operation successfully, and we are glad to see the great improvements in our serving capability and level. With the celebration of the successful application of these three systems, we are going to hold the International Symposium on Knowledge Management and Digital Service, through which we hope to exchange practical experiences on digital services with the libraries at home and abroad, explore the patterns for knowledge management adapted to the development of the digital era and thus raise the level of the digital services of the libraries.
